On intention, authorship, moral direction, and why tools do not replace the one who chooses the path.

There is a question underneath almost every conversation about AI and creativity.

It is not really about software.
It is not really about speed.
It is not really about prompts.

The real question is this:

Who is steering the work?

My answer is simple:

I am.

That is what I mean when I say my creative compass stays mine.

I may use AI in the process. I may use it often. I may use it deeply. But the direction, the meaning, the boundaries, the intention, and the final shape of the work are still human-led.

Mine.


What a “creative compass” actually means

When I say creative compass, I do not mean mood. I do not mean aesthetics. I do not mean a brand palette or a writing vibe.

I mean the deeper thing that governs all of it:

  • what I will and will not make
  • what I believe is worth saying
  • how I treat people in the work
  • what lines I will not cross for attention
  • what kind of creator I am becoming while I create

That compass is not generated by a model.

It is formed by:

  • values
  • discipline
  • taste
  • conscience
  • life experience
  • responsibility

AI can support execution.
It cannot replace authorship of intention.


Tools can accelerate output — but they cannot decide meaning

This is where a lot of people get confused.

They see someone using AI and assume the machine is now “making the art.” But output volume is not the same thing as authorship. Speed is not the same thing as vision.

You can generate ten pages in ten minutes and still have no idea what you are trying to say.

And you can write one paragraph in an hour—with help—and have something truthful, intentional, and fully your own.

AI can help me:

  • sort possibilities
  • test structure
  • stress-test ideas
  • surface blind spots
  • reframe a scene
  • compare options
  • organize complexity

But it cannot decide:

  • what my story stands for
  • what my characters mean to me
  • which themes are sacred, dangerous, tender, or necessary
  • what I refuse to exploit
  • what kind of truth I want my work to carry

That work is mine.
That responsibility is mine.
That compass is mine.


Why this matters more than ever

We are in a moment where people can produce content faster than they can examine themselves.

That is not only a technical problem.
It is a creative and ethical problem.

Because when the tool becomes powerful, the user’s internal compass matters even more.

If your values are weak, AI will scale your confusion.
If your intention is performative, AI will scale your noise.
If your standards are unclear, AI will scale your inconsistency.

But if your compass is steady?

AI becomes exactly what it should be:

  • a tool
  • an assistant
  • a mirror
  • a drafting partner
  • a structural support
  • a force multiplier for human craft

That is the difference.


My line: assistance is allowed, authorship is not surrendered

I do not believe using AI automatically weakens a creator.

I believe unexamined use weakens a creator.

My standard is not “never use tools.”
My standard is: do not hand over the part that makes the work yours.

For me, that means:

  • I choose the direction.
  • I choose the tone.
  • I choose the meaning.
  • I choose what stays and what gets cut.
  • I choose what aligns with my values and what does not.
  • I take responsibility for the final work.

That last one matters.

Because no matter how many tools are involved, the published piece carries my name.

If it carries my name, it must pass through my compass.


Creative responsibility cannot be outsourced

There is a temptation in every era to let the tool become an excuse.

To say:

  • “The AI gave me that.”
  • “I was just experimenting.”
  • “That’s what the model produced.”

But if you are the one choosing what to publish, then you are still accountable for what you release.

This is not a punishment. It is authorship.

And honestly, it is what protects the dignity of creative work.

Because it keeps the human where the human belongs:
at the center of the judgment layer.

The model can generate options.
I decide what is worthy.

The model can draft language.
I decide what is true.

The model can offer structure.
I decide what is mine.


Faith, intention, and barakah in the work

For me, this is not only a professional stance. It is also a spiritual one.

I do not believe tools are inherently pure or impure by themselves. What matters is how they are used, what they are used for, and the state of the one using them.

Intention matters.

If the intention is lazy, deceptive, exploitative, or arrogant, that enters the work.

If the intention is clean—if the work is done with honesty, responsibility, discipline, and respect—then the tool remains a vessel.

The technology is not my compass.

My values are.

And as long as I keep that clear, I do not feel threatened by the tool. I feel responsible in front of it.


What this looks like in practice

“My creative compass stays mine” is not just a slogan. It changes how I actually work.

It affects what I ask AI to do

  • I ask for support, not replacement.
  • I ask for options, not decisions.
  • I ask for analysis, not authority.
  • I ask for structure, not soul.

It affects what I reject

  • Anything that sounds derivative of another creator’s voice
  • Anything that dilutes my tone
  • Anything that feels clever but false
  • Anything that violates my boundaries, values, or artistic standards

It affects how I edit

  • I rewrite aggressively when needed.
  • I cut what does not sound like me.
  • I slow down when something feels “too easy.”
  • I keep the human judgment active at every stage.

It affects how I teach

  • I do not teach people to rely on AI as identity.
  • I teach people to build process, taste, and discernment.
  • I teach co-creation, not surrender.
  • I teach structure that protects the human hand.

This is the line I draw

I am not anti-tool.
I am anti-abdication.

I am not interested in purity performance.
I am interested in integrity.

I am not trying to prove that AI should do nothing.
I am proving that the human must remain the author of meaning.

That is the line.

And that line is what lets me work boldly without losing myself.

So yes, I write with AI.

But I do not hand it my name.
I do not hand it my conscience.
I do not hand it my authorship.
I do not hand it my compass.

The work may be assisted.
The direction is still mine.

And that is exactly how it should be.
